Early Work

Abstract geometric artwork with sharp-edged shapes in black, white, beige, and orange on a beige background. Relief panel painted in emulsion on wood.

I first exhibited in 1966 at the Cardiff Museum / Castle in a show called ‘Structure 1966’ organised by the Welsh Arts Council.

A newspaper clipping about a 22-year-old Wimbledon girl, Judith Drury, and her painting that was chosen for a major exhibition. The photo shows Judith Drury with a smiling expression and a distinctive hairstyle.

After this, the Cambridge Arts Council requested a work for an exhibition called ‘ Painting becomes Sculpture becomes Painting, which was to be shown in their gallery in All Saints Passage.  My work was another relief panel, painted in oil on board. It was also shown in the Kettles Yard Gallery as well as the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank in London

Puppet Paintings

At the beginning of the 1970’s and for the next few years I painted a series of pictures using clowns, puppets and lay figures in abstract settings.

These large oil paintings were not about circus or puppet shows. The figurative elements were symbols chosen to explore visually the journey taken in life towards greater spiritual understanding and awareness. What Jung described as the process of individuation.

I made several drawings of the same theme.

Some of these images were shown in my solo exhibition at The Nuffield Theatre Gallery - University of Southampton.

This was at the end of my two year stint as the Fellow in Fine Art: 1971 - 1973.

Three further images using symbols to explore consciousness and the nature of self.
